A team of four Ford engineers and Ford NASCAR star David Ragan, test drove the new model of the sports car at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, where they focused on mileage instead of speed. The Mustang 1,000 Lap Challenge intended to prove that a regular Mustang V-6 could cover at least 1,000 laps and 533 miles on a single tank of fuel. With the aid of fuel efficient driving techniques by Ford engineers, the Mustang continued far beyond the objective of 1,000 laps. The car used up the fuel in the tank after having covered 1,457 laps at an average speed of 43.9 miles per hour. Impressively, the 16 gallon tank was used up at the rate of 48.5 miles per gallon, setting a new record for the already notable Mustang.

This is no surprise since the 2011 Ford Mustang is powered by a new 3.7-liter V-6 engine along with an advanced six-speed transmission that uses the best in engineering and technology to contribute to its great performance and fuel economy. It?s also estimated to push 305 horsepower and give 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

Becoming a fuel economy pioneer in every segment of automotives is part of the vision of the Ford Company and the Mustang is moving in the right direction. The Challenge team completed the challenge in 17 hours and 40 minutes, showing off the 2011 Mustang V-6's amazing fuel economy. One lucky person, who correctly guessed 1,457 laps will be randomly drawn from among the correct entries and will win a 2011 Mustang V-6.
